Scour the News for an Entirely Uninteresting Story. Consider How It Connects to Your Life.
Earlier this week, a minor news story reported that a small town in Belgium has officially changed the color of its public benches from forest green to soft blue. The reason? To “create a more relaxing atmosphere in public spaces.” That’s it. No protests. No political undertone. Just benches, getting a makeover.
At first glance, this seems like the kind of story that barely deserves a mention. But strangely, it connected with me.
I realized how often we overlook the small changes around us—the ones that seem unimportant but quietly affect our mood. Just like those benches, I recently rearranged my living room. I didn’t buy anything new. I just moved a chair, changed a curtain, and replaced a dark lamp with a warmer one. Suddenly, I felt calmer at home. The space felt lighter. More “me.”
Reading about the bench color change made me appreciate how even simple, boring updates can improve our daily lives. Sometimes it’s not the big news that shapes us, but the gentle decisions made quietly in the background. We don’t always need dramatic change—just a touch of soft blue in our everyday.
