Write about a random act of kindness you’ve done for someone.

Sometimes, the most powerful acts of kindness come in the smallest, quietest moments—when no one is watching, and there’s no expectation of anything in return.

I remember a day not long ago when I was waiting in line at the grocery store. It was late afternoon, and everyone looked tired—myself included. In front of me was a young mother with a baby on her hip and a toddler clinging to her leg. She looked exhausted, overwhelmed, and a little embarrassed. She was doing her best to keep everything together.

As the cashier scanned her items, the mother started to look concerned. She opened her purse, checked her pockets, and then quietly said, “I think I’m short.” She looked at the cashier, then around, clearly trying to decide what she could do without.

I didn’t even think about it. I stepped forward and said gently, “It’s okay. I’ll take care of the rest.” It wasn’t much—just a few extra dollars—but the look on her face said everything. Her eyes filled with tears, and for a moment, she just stood there in silence. “Thank you,” she whispered. “You have no idea what this means today.”

And maybe I didn’t. Maybe I’ll never know the full weight of what she was carrying that day. But that’s the thing about kindness—it doesn’t need an explanation or a reason. Sometimes, it’s about doing the right thing because you can.

As I walked out of the store, I didn’t feel like a hero. I felt human. I felt connected. And I was reminded how much we all need each other—especially in the moments when life feels heavy.

That day taught me that we never really know what someone else is going through. But we always have the chance to make things just a little bit easier for them. And sometimes, that’s more than enough.
